Dahlem-Shenkman Law Enforcement Award

In honor of Lt. Corey Dahlem and Dr. Fred Shenkman, the Dahlem-Shenkman Law Enforcement Award is given annually to one undergraduate and one graduate student for their research on law enforcement.

Lieutenant Corey Dahlem was struck and killed on West University Avenue by a drunk driver while on foot patrol during celebration ceremonies following the 2007 University of Florida’s basketball teams national championship win. Lieutenant Dahlem had served with the Gainesville Police Department for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Dr. Frederick A. Shenkman

Dr. Fred “Doc” Shenkman is a distinguished UF alumnus and emeritus faculty member. His dedication to research related to police administration, police procedures, and law enforcement has helped make this scholarship possible for future generations of criminologists.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Criminology Major (Undergraduate or Graduate)
  • Applicants must not have been convicted of any alcohol-related offense, reckless driving, or any type of driving or operating under the influence charge.
  • Applicants are required to submit a research project focused on law enforcement.

First preference is given to children of current sworn law enforcement officers in the Gainesville, Florida Police Department. Subsequent preferences are given to the children of current then former sworn law enforcement officers in other Florida law enforcement agencies and then to any candidate seeking to pursue a degree in Criminology.

INTERESTED STUDENTS SHOULD SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

  • COPY OF COMPLETED RESEARCH PROJECT
  • A CURRENT CV
  • (1) LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION: must be from a UF faculty member or Graduate Assistant (undergraduate applications only). Recommendations should be emailed directly to Dr. Lora Levett (undergraduate applicants) or Dr. Monika Ardelt (graduate applicants).
