WHO WE ARE

UF’s International Ethnography Lab is a collaborative space that works to foster engagement with ethnographic methods, approaches, and sensibilities across and beyond the university. Our lab connects students, faculty, artists, and activists utilizing ethnographic and qualitative methods more broadly to facilitate interdisciplinary and international conversations, networking, and fieldwork. The lab supports learning about and use of traditional and contemporary approaches to qualitative research including creative nonfiction, documentary, and narrative filmmaking, and creative and experimental ethnographies. The space is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about and experimenting with ethnographic and qualitative methods more broadly.

WHAT WE DO

We provide formal training on ethnographic methods and qualitative approaches as well as informal spaces in which support and collaboration can organically develop among members. Our activities and events include conferences, lunch talks, participatory workshops, guest speakers, and writing groups. Through lab meetings and events, we prioritize learning ethnography as craft as well as preparing students for the diverse challenges that arise during fieldwork in different regions and contexts. This preparation is informed by an awareness that challenges—ranging from issues like access to sexual harassment—often differ according to the researcher’s embodiment, social location, and self-presentation.
