About

Oluwatobi Alawode is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology with a concentration in Medical Sociology and Demography.

My research focuses on the social determinants of health and healthcare utilization; global health; substance use behaviors; demography; and sexual, reproductive, and maternal health. Specifically, I am interested in how social and structural factors create disparities in health status, health behaviors, and the ability to access and utilize healthcare services. In addition, my global health research focus is on sexual, reproductive, maternal, and child health. Specifically, I try to investigate how multilevel factors determine sexual, reproductive, maternal, and child health, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. I am interested in employing quantitative methodology involving analysis of large-scale population-representative data to answer research questions in these areas. My dissertation is focused on understanding how social and civic stratification amidst some other factors in the Immigrants’ adaption of the Andersen model for healthcare utilization by Yang and Yang [2016] creates within and between group inequalities in access and utilization of healthcare services among Black Immigrants in the United States. To investigate this, I am employing a quantitative methodology that involves the analysis of cross-sectional survey data from the National Health Interview Survey [NHIS] from the years 2008 – 2018 in this dissertation. I am also working on papers about disparities in healthcare utilization among young people in the United States from an intersectional perspective by analyzing data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System [BRFSS] and several papers on global health issues using data from the USAID-funded Demographic and Health Survey [DHS].
