Sociology Graduate Student Seun Ajoseh Publishes Research on Nigeria’s Medical Brain Drain

The Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law proudly highlights the recent publication of Seun Ajoseh, a graduate student in our sociology program, who is the first author of a new article in Globalization and Health. His research examines the public discourse surrounding a controversial 2023 bill in Nigeria aimed at curbing the emigration of medical doctors by withholding their full licenses for five years.

Nigeria, like many developing countries, has experienced a significant medical brain drain, with nearly half of its licensed doctors emigrating to more advanced economies. Ajoseh’s study analyzes public responses to the proposed legislation using data from newspaper articles, blogs, Twitter, and LinkedIn. His findings reveal widespread opposition to the bill, with concerns ranging from government hypocrisy and human rights violations to the failure to address the root causes of migration, such as poor working conditions and economic instability.

By shedding light on the complex factors influencing public opinion on this issue, Ajoseh’s research contributes to broader discussions on skilled labor migration and global health inequalities.
