Four longtime faculty members from the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law were honored on February 1 at the annual UF Service Recognition Reception, sponsored by the Office for the Vice President of Human Resources.
The faculty members recognized for their exceptional service were Dr. Monika Ardelt (30 years), Dr. Marian Borg (30 years), and Dr. Jodi Lane (25 years).
Dr. Ardelt is renowned for her work in the field of social gerontology, focusing on wisdom, well-being, and successful aging. Her research has made significant contributions to understanding how older adults achieve life satisfaction and resilience. Dr. Borg‘s research explores various forms of social control, including legal mechanisms, surveillance, and conflict mediation. Her work has examined topics such as juvenile violence, the death penalty, and small-claims mediation, while her current research focuses on county court judges’ sentencing practices, judicial philosophies, and identity management. Dr. Lane studies fear of crime and gang involvement among the public and juvenile offenders. Her research refines theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding the causes and consequences of fear, while also exploring justice system experiences through surveys and evaluation research.
These faculty members have made invaluable contributions to both the department and their respective fields, and their service to the University of Florida is deeply appreciated. Thank you all, and congratulations on this honor.
