Sociology and Criminology & Law

Fall 2023 Academic Jobs Panel

DATE: Monday, November 20
TIME: 11:45AM – 12:35PM EST
LOCATION: https://ufl.zoom.us/j/96639318211

The Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law holds a jobs panel every semester to offer our graduate students a chance to hear about the job market from alumni. These alumni, from both the Sociology and Criminology & Law programs, offer invaluable insights and advice on the job-seeking process. This is also an opportunity for our graduate students to connect with our alumni and strengthen their professional networks.

This upcoming panel will focus on the academic job market (an additional panel in the Spring will focus on non-academic job markets). Because the panel this year is being held during the week of Thanksgiving, we will be holding an all-virtual event to ensure that the maximum number of people can attend.

This year we are pleased to have the following UF alumni speakers on the academic jobs panel:

  • Dr. Gissel Perez, Assistant Professor in the School of Sociology, University of Arizona
  • Dr. Ryan Thomson, Assistant Professor in the department of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, Auburn University
  • Dr. Wally Wojciechowski, Assistant Professor in the School of Criminal Justice, Michigan State University.

Each panelist will offer brief comments highlighting their advice stemming from their experience in seeking an academic job. They will various address issues including 1) how they presented themselves and their work as a scholar in written applications, 2) how they identified institutions to which they applied, and 3) how they prepared and then managed their visits for interviews. Our intent is that most of the time thus be left for current grad students to ask questions of the panelists to foster dialogue.

Special thanks to our graduate student organizers, Shelby Mikkelson and Unna Yared, and Dr. Edo Navot for their work in helping make this panel possible.
