Now Accepting Applications for the Humphries Leadership Award

The Department of Sociology invites our sociology majors to apply for the annual Jack B. Humphries Leadership Award. This award honors a sociology major with a distinguished academic record, particularly in their sociology course work, and with a record of active involvement in extra-curricular activities, student organizations, and professional associations, with special attention paid to those who serve in leadership positions in these organizations. The winner is recognized with a medal of honor.

Eligibility Requirements for the Humphries Leadership Award:

  1. Sociology major with a minimum of 19 hrs. of sociology (SY) courses completed by the end of the Spring 2022 semester AND with an expected graduation date of Spring 2023, Summer 2023 or Fall 2023.
  2. Current 3.5 GPA in sociology courses.
  3. Record of active involvement in extra-curricular activities, especially in leadership roles (ex. campus clubs, student government, pre-professional organizations, off-campus internships, non-profit organizations, and/or other organizational involvement.)

Application Procedures:

  1. Provide contact info (name, UF-ID, phone, email) and a one-page, single-spaced (approx. 400-500 words) description of how you are going to use your sociology major & extra-curricular activities in your chosen career path.
  2. A transcript (unofficial is acceptable).
  3. A resume or CV.
  4. A letter of recommendation from one sociology faculty member or graduate instructor (recommendation can be emailed to Professor Cox or included with your packet, whichever the recommender prefers).
  5. APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED: Friday, April 7, 2023.
