Congratulations to Dr. Harvey Nicholson! This year Dr. Nicholson has led and published two articles on discrimination and health among Asians and Asian Americans. In an article published in the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, he used nationally representative data to examine the relationship between major and everyday forms of discrimination and health status. He found that certain indicators of discrimination, such as being denied a promotion or the ability to move into a neighborhood, were associated with poorer perceived well-being. In a second paper, published in Race and Social Problems, Dr. Nicholson and his co-author explored the association between health and various forms of microaggression. Their study showed that discriminatory experiences faced by Asian Americans, such as being treated as if you do not speak English, were linked with poorer perceived health status. In a third article for the Sociological Compass, Dr. Nicholson and Dr. Yao Li discussed the “othering” and marginalization processes experienced by Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic.
