Constance L. Shehan is an interdisciplinary scholar who joined the faculty at the University of Florida after completing her Ph.D. in Sociology at The Pennsylvania State University. She has held a number of administrative and leadership roles at UF. Her administrative roles include serving as Director of the Women’s Studies Program, Director of the University Center for Excellence in Teaching, Associate Dean in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law. Her leadership roles include serving as President of the UF Chapter of the United Faculty of Florida, Chair/President Pro Tempore of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Assembly, President of the Association of Academic Women, and President of the Beta chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She has been actively involved in the Graduate School, serving on the Graduate Council, Chairing the Teaching Award Committee, and frequently participating in the orientation for new graduate students.
Dr. Shehan has received numerous awards for teaching and mentoring, including the UF Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the College of Liberal Arts Teacher of the Year Award, the Ernest Groves Award for Excellence in Teaching about Families (presented by the National Council on Family Relations), the International Award for Excellence in Teaching with Technology, and the UF Graduate School’s Award for Doctoral Dissertation Mentoring.
Dr. Shehan is an internationally recognized scholar in the sociological study of families. She is an elected Fellow of the National Council on Family Relations, where she also served on the Board of Directors and Chair of the Feminism and Family Studies section. She is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Family Issues and has served on the editorial boards of Social Forces, Journal of Marriage and Families, Family Relations, and the Journal of Family and Economic Issues.
