About

Bonnie Ernst (Ph.D. Northwestern University, 2018) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, Criminology & Law. Her research focuses on the history of race, gender, and criminal justice in the United States. She is currently working on her first book manuscript, which examines how the women’s movement shaped activism among incarcerated women, attorneys, and community leaders during the rise of mass incarceration in Detroit.
Ernst received her B.A. in History from the University of Chicago and her M.Sc. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford. She holds a Ph.D. in History from Northwestern University. Ernst taught in the Department of Criminal Justice at Indiana University at Bloomington for one year before joining the UF faculty in 2019.
