Lunchtime Colloquium Series: Kahler, Klevtcova, Swanson, Tierney, and Ferrer

January 21, 2026, 11:40 AM-12:40 PM

Presenters: Jessica S. Kahler, Anna Klevtcova, Emily K Swanson, Carla E. Tierney, and Roberto Ferrer;
Presentation Title: “Angling for Guardianship: Perceptions of Crime Seriousness and Willingness to Intervene when Witnessing Fisheries Violations”

Kahler and her student colleagues will discuss research aimed at investigating Florida fishers’ perceptions of fisheries violation seriousness, how they qualify their perceptions of fisheries violation seriousness, and how these perceptions and other demographic characteristics influence their preferences for the level of guardianship intervention (e.g., ignore it, call authorities, stop it alone). Within the context of this research, we will discuss how this collaboration grew from an undergraduate honors project in criminology and law, to a collaboration between interdisciplinary students and scholars that has already produced one peer-reviewed paper with more, such as this working paper, in the works.
