The 6th Annual Conference of the Social Sciences is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd, 2010 in Matherly Hall with the theme, "Intersections of Social Life." Dr. Ronald Simons, Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology, will be presenting this year's keynote address. The title of his talk is: "Unfair treatment, plasticity genes, and aggression: The importance of gene-environment interplay in the social sciences”.

Environmental Moderators of Genetic Influence on Adolescent Delinquent Involvement and Victimization, a lecture by Kevin Beaver, Ph.D. College of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Florida State University. The winner of the American Society of Criminology Ruth Shonle Cavan Young Scholar Award, Dr. Beaver's research examines the biosocial underpinnings to antisocial behaviors. He has employed behavioral genetic and molecular genetic methodologies to unpack the gene-environmental basis to a range of criminal and delinquent outcomes. Sponsored by the Institute for Crime, Justice, and Policy Research.

Daniel Fernandez-Baca "Technology in the Classroom"
Daniel will be discussing how to successfully use technology in the classroom.  Additionally, he will be presenting different outlets to help instructors incorporate more technology in the classroom.

February 13

Jeanne Holcomb title TBA
Jeanne will present material from a manuscript that will be submitted to a journal in the near future. After presenting the material, the attendees will give feedback and discuss possible ways to improve the manuscript before submission. This workshop will allow other researchers the chance to see the peer-review process in action.

February 27

Kenzie Latham title TBA
This workshop will follow the same format as the previous one. See above for a description.

March 20

Workshop "CV Preparation & Enhancement"
This workshop will be just in time for the annual report. The facilitator will discuss how to prepare a CV and also ways to improve current CVs.

March 27

SSS Preview
The SSS Preview will allow SSS attendees a chance to practice their presentations. Furthermore, this will also be a great opportunity for other students and faculty to see some of the research being conducted in the department.
